Napoli reached the final of the Coppa Italia after two competitive 1/2-final legs against Inter Milan. The second leg in Naples ended with a 1-1 draw, but Napoli’s 1-0 win at the San Siro was enough for them to progress in the competition.
For Napoli this is a first participance at the final since 2014 when they beat Fiorentina and won the trophy. Meanwhile the club’s manager Gennaro Gattuso is fighting to win his first trophy as a coach. Gattuso is a world champion and a Champions League winner as a player, but he is still waiting for his first trophy as a manager.
Dries Mertens scored the decisive goal for Napoli in the second leg against Inter Milan. For the Belgian forward this was a historical goal because he’s now Napoli’s number one goalscorer of all time.
Juventus qualified for the final in a strange way – without beating AC Milan in the both matches they played. The second leg at the Allianz Stadium ended with a 0-0 draw, but the 1-1 draw in Milan allowed Juve to progress to the final. For Juve it became easier in the second leg as AC Milan’s Ante Rebic got sent off after just 16 minutes of playing.
